Chemicals we are exposed to daily!

Daily exposure to chemicals!

Something to think about and act on!

What are we and our families ingesting and using daily?

Parenting has been by far the hardest and most rewarding thing We have ever done as a couple.

Meeting my husband when we were both teenagers and having our first child 10 years later, we thought we were prepared/ready. I don’t think you can ever be prepared for parenthood and I don’t think there is anything anyone can say to you, for you to really understand the emotions, exhaustion and love you can feel all at one time. You want to protect this little soul with everything you have and as they get older that doesn’t seem to change.

I have always been very particular about what I wanted to feed our children and also how we would raise them. I wanted our children to play in the mud, climb trees and not have to worry about making a mess while using their imagination and learning through play. My husband and myself had both grown up in the country and wanted our kids to also feel that connection to nature and the freedom of open spaces.

Although I am a health educator and was taught all about diet/nutrition and the famous health pyramid at school and at University it wasn’t until I discovered the world of additives and chemicals in our food and products that I started to open my eyes and really gain an understanding of the toxic products we are ingesting and exposing our bodies to daily. Have you ever thought about the bleach which is on flour unless it says unbleached? Tea bags, baking paper all have been bleached.

Have you ever looked at the ingredients of a product and realised there are a lot of numbers there rather than words? Most of these numbers are additives and chemicals which are harmful to our brains, hormones and overall development! As a parent learning this frightened the hell out of me and also made me really angry that these things were allowed in our foods! Processed meats containing nitrates when they actually can be processed without them! A lot of these additives have caused major problems, headaches, stomach and skin irritations, aggressive behaviour and uncontrolled emotions, this isn’t just in children! Synthetic fragrances have been compared to passive smoking!

All of this just blew my mind, how the Government would allow this to happen! Where are the regulations stopping these nasty’s getting into our foods and into our families bodies? Why it is that money and greed has allowed a society, in which is allowing people to eat this crap without them realising the implications to their health!

As a parent this is frightening! These chemicals are in pre-packaged baby/ children’s products, formula, wipes, nappies, bottles/ drink bottles, dummies, containers the list goes on and on! So how do we navigate this as a society? Why does it have to be so difficult? The marketing of products is there to confuse us.  I now look for non-bleached on the product. I quickly check out the ingredients and look for numbers on there (I use the chemical maze app or google the numbers) I try and make better selections in the supermarket and make food from home when possible.

We all need to start opening our eyes and understanding, the food processing companies and the government don’t care about our health!

We need to stand up and make better choices for ourselves and our families!

the things I look out for and use to help me

The Chemical Maze book/ App, is a massive help to me and I have both the book and the app. It includes the INS: chemical numbers, additive name, functions: what it actually does, Code from safe to potentially hazardous, potential effects: physical and emotional ect, Possible uses: what type of products you may find them in. Personally this took a lot of the researching and guessing out for me. in the supermarket I just type the numbers into the app and check out what it says! super easy. https://chemicalmaze.com/

it isn’t always easy to find the products you want with out the crap in them I do have to purchase some items online and also from health food shops depending on what I need. Bright Organics have an excellent range of products and they post https://www.brightorganics.com.au/

When you are looking at baby foods and snacks. look for Australian products and also think about purchasing the reusable pouches and making your own! I have used little mashies and found these excellent for yoghurt also https://littlemashies.com/

These are just a few places I have used. Hopefully this helps!
